Does cold weather affect lithium batteries?
Yes, but not in the way most people expect. Cold weather doesn't damage a lithium (LiFePO4) battery just by being cold. The real issue is specifically charging in freezing conditions. Below 0°C, charging a lithium battery can cause lithium plating inside the cells, which permanently reduces capacity and, in serious cases, can create a short circuit. This is why every quality LiFePO4 battery has a Battery Management System (BMS) that blocks charging below a safe temperature threshold.
Discharging (actually using the battery to run your appliances) is a different story. LiFePO4 batteries handle cold discharge well, typically down to around -20°C, though cold temperatures do temporarily reduce usable capacity, since internal resistance rises as the battery cools. That capacity loss is temporary and recovers once the battery warms back up; it's not permanent damage like cold-charging can cause.
This combination is exactly what causes the frustrating scenario a lot of van and motorhome owners describe: bright winter sun hitting your solar panel, power being generated, but your battery simply refusing to accept it because the BMS has locked out charging until things warm up. Some in the industry call this the "lithium cold-weather wall."
Can you charge a lithium battery below freezing at all?
Only if the battery has a way to warm itself first. The general safe charging range for lithium batteries is 0°C to 45°C. Below that, a battery without heating simply won't charge, full stop, until the ambient temperature rises on its own. A battery with built-in heating pads can get around this by warming the cells using the incoming charge current before letting any of it through to actually charge the battery, which is the approach Fogstar's Drift and Drift PRO ranges use.
How Fogstar's heating pads work
In the Drift and Drift PRO ranges, a 36W internal heating pad activates automatically whenever you try to charge at 0°C or below. It's powered entirely by the incoming charge current, not the battery's own stored energy, so there's nothing to switch on manually. You plug your charger in as normal, the pads warm the cells to a safe temperature (around 5°C), and only then does the battery start actually accepting charge.
The Drift Eco range does not include heating pads. Its BMS still protects the cells, but it does so by blocking charging entirely below the safe threshold rather than warming the battery, so you simply have to wait until the ambient temperature rises above freezing naturally before it will charge again.
Eco vs Drift/Drift PRO: which do you actually need?
- You probably don't need heating pads if your battery lives somewhere insulated or heated (a motorhome habitation area, a heated garage), or if you mainly charge during the day when temperatures are more likely to sit above freezing
- Heating pads will genuinely help if you regularly charge overnight in an unheated garage, driveway, or exposed location through UK winter, since overnight temperatures below freezing are common across most of the country from November to March
- Heating pads will genuinely help if your setup relies on unattended solar or DC-DC charging, since you won't be there to notice charging has been blocked by cold and simply wait it out
Both approaches keep the battery safe. The difference is convenience in cold weather, not safety, and Eco's lower price reflects that trade-off.
